A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing a 44-year-old man five times outside the Goat Hill Tavern in Costa Mesa. According to a news report in the Daily Pilot, the arrest occurred after an early morning brawl involving several people.
Officials say the alleged victim was leaving the bar with friends when he was confronted by the 27-year-old man. After an exchange of words, the man called someone, others pulled up and a fight ensued. The man fled the scene, but officials were able to track him down with the help of witnesses who provided a partial license plate number. The injured man was taken to an area hospital where he is said to be in stable condition. The defendant faces several charges including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and criminal street gang activity.
Allegations such as assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder in California are serious charges with extremely grave consequences. Those who are convicted of these offenses are looking at significant time in prison, hefty fines, and other personal and financial repercussions. These crimes will also count as “strikes” under the California Three Strikes Law, which means that the stakes could become much higher if the defendant is ever arrested or convicted again. When an enhancement such as a weapons or gang enhancement is added on to the charges, the sentencing can be even harsher.
