Orange County Drug Crime
ORANGE COUNTY RESOURCES
While the focus on crime in Southern California is often centered on areas like Los Angeles, Orange County is host to many drug crimes every year. As such, local law enforcement and rehabilitation centers are focused on both punishing drug crimes and ending the cycle of addiction for OC citizens.
The United States has long held a firm stance on illegal drugs with its War on Drugs campaign both across the nation and around the world. Many Orange County drug crimes hold severe penalties for those involved in the use and trade of illegal narcotics. These rules apply to California as well, where many are sentenced every year to lengthy prison terms and large fines for their involvement with illegal drugs.
Understanding Drug Crime Penalties
While there are many types of drugs that are considered illegal in California, they are not all prosecuted the same. Drugs such as heroin and methamphetamine are subject to generally harsher penalties than marijuana. The California Health and Safety Code differentiates the punishments for these types of drugs and defendants can be subject to various penalties including imprisonment and fines. Drugs that are considered illegal in California are:
- Methamphetamines;
- Cocaine;
- Crack;
- Heroin;
- PCP;
- Marijuana without a prescription;
- Ecstasy;
- LSD;
- Illegally used prescription drugs; and
- Many other forms of depressants, stimulants, and opioids.
Drug Crime Circumstances
While possession of illegal drugs can result in criminal charges, the toughest punishments come with other actions taken with these substances. Drug trafficking results in severe penalties and includes distribution, manufacturing, transporting, selling, and possession with intent to sell, all of which result in much harsher penalties than possession.
In addition, drug crimes that involve a minor or, under California Health and Safety Code Section 11380.1 (2), are located within 1,000 feet of school are met with even stricter penalties from law enforcement. Many who are charged with such crimes are subject to multiple convictions, resulting in compounded penalties that can leave a defendant imprisoned for decades and subjected to tens of thousands of dollars in fines.
